Panelists analyzed moments, strategies, and actions that determined the outcome of the Civil War. After each author had talked about his book, they responded to questions from members of the audience. William Freehling moderated.

Burrus M. Carnahan, a foreign affairs officer in the Bureau of Nonproliferation at the U.S. Department of State, is the author of Act of Justice: Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and the Law of War, published by University Press of Kentucky. Aaron Sheehan-Dean is the author of Why Confederates Fought: Family and Nation in Civil War Virginia, published by The University of North Carolina Press. Christian Spielvogel is the creator of Valley SIM: An Online Reenactment of the American Civil War.
