Nina Hachigian and Mona Sutphen talked about their book The Next American Century: How the U.S. Can Thrive As Other Powers Rise, published by Simon and Schuster. They maintain that the United States can prosper amidst the rise in power of foreign countries. They claim that the U.S. should focus on solving its own problems while maintaining and creating partnerships abroad. The authors also share their ideas for dealing with challenges to American dominance. They discussed their ideas with Kal Raustiala and responded to questions from members of the audience.

Nina Hachigian was on the staff of the National Security Council from 1998 to 1999. Mona Sutphen previously served as a Foreign Service officer and as special assistant to U.S. National Security Adviser Samuel R. Berger.

The event was recorded before a live audience at the NPR West production center as part of the Zócalo “Public Square” Lecture Series and later broadcast on Zócalo Radio on KPCC 89.3 FM. close
