Liz Clarke talked about her book One Helluva Ride: How NASCAR Swept the Nation, published by Villard. In her book she recounts the history of the stock car racing league, NASCAR and its social and political affect on the nation. Founded on dirt tracks in the South, NASCAR is now a billion dollar industry with the second-largest viewer ship in American sports. Ms. Clarke examines NASCAR’s growth and its decision to curtail sponsorship by tobacco companies and the introduction of Japanese cars to attract a larger audience. After her remarks she responded to questions from the audience. close
