Former Representative Edwards (R-OK) spoke on presidential leadership. He talked about the concept of unitary presidential authority and how that has been expressed such as in campaign statements, the actions of federal agencies, and in signing statements. He provided examples from the Bush administration and he contrasted it with the constitutional provisions for separation of powers. Former Representative Edwards responded to questions from members of the audience. Professor Baker made introductory remarks.

Mickey Edwards is the author of Reclaiming Conservatism: How a Great American Political Movement Got Lost--And How It Can Find Its Way Back, forthcoming from Oxford University Press.

This event was part of the Inside Washington Academic Seminar on “The Pursuit of the Presidency” held at The Carnegie Institution of Washington. close
