Fran Townsend talked about her roles as assistant to President Bush for homeland security and counterterrorism and her previous work. She served as the homeland security adviser for President Bush from May of 2004 until January 2008. Before that she served as deputy assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser for combating terrorism. Other government positions included acting deputy assistant attorney general in the Criminal Division at the Justice Department and assistant commandant for Intelligence at the U.S Coast Guard. She talked about the daily routine, the scope of the work, reforms that have been made in intelligence and progress in security, people she has worked with, political infighting, the media, and the importance of maintaining a culture of professionals working in an apolitical manner. close
