A grand re-opening ceremony was held for President Lincoln’s Cottage at the President Lincoln and Soldiers' Home National Monument as part of the beginning of the two-year celebration of the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth on February 12, 1809. Speakers described Lincoln’s presidency during the civil war. They also described the 34-room house 3 miles north of the White House that served as a summer retreat for the Lincoln family during the Civil War, 1862-1864. President Lincoln lived there for approximately one-fourth of his presidency. The restoration by the National Trust for Historic Preservation also was described.
