Government officials and representatives of commercial interests talked about public and private approaches to food safety in the U.S. Topics included the February 17 recall of 143 million pounds of beef by the Hallmark Meat Packing Company, epidemiological approaches, risk-based inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture inspection work force, and communicating information to the public. After their presentations the panelists responded to audience members' questions.
