Rep. Edward Markey talked about energy legislation and the energy investment package passed by the House, which includes repeals of $18 billion in tax breaks to the oil companies and reapportions that money to renewable energy. Similar legislation passed the House last summer but drew a veto threat from the president and was dropped from the final bill. As oil prices that day broke the all-time record high of over $103 a barrel, Representative Markey asked that President Bush not oppose the new legislation. He responded to reporters' questions. close
