David Work spoke on the topic, “Why Lincoln Appointed Political Generals.”

He talked about the scarcity of generals in the U.S. Army at the beginning of the Civil War and Lincoln’s solution, which was to appoint politicians to high command. He explained President Lincoln’s reasoning and discussed his belief that the policy of appointing political generals was essential to building a national coalition to wage the Civil War. Mr. Work also talked about the battlefield performance of these political generals and their impact on the political and military goals of the Lincoln administration.

“The Latest in Lincoln Scholarship,” the Eleventh Annual Abraham Lincoln Institute Symposium, was sponsored by the Abraham Lincoln Institute, Inc; the National Archives; the Foundation for the National Archives; the Illinois State Society of Washington, DC; and individuals. It was hosted by the National Archives at College Park. close
