The Citizens Committee to Confirm Clarence Thomas held a news conference in Washington, DC, to announce their support for the nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court seat vacated by the resignation of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Mr. Broadus said the committee found through its research of Clarence Thomas' background that the nominee supported civil rights, but differed from civil rights groups in how to achieve civil rights. He said criticism of Clarence Thomas represented the attempt of some interests to impose “political correctness” on the black community. close
