Robin Cutler talked about her book A Soul on Trial: A Marine Corps Mystery at the Turn of the Twentieth Century, published by Rowman and Littlefield Publishers. In 1907, Marine Lieutenant James N. Sutton’s sudden death on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis was ruled a suicide. His mother, Rosa Sutton, challenged the verdict and gained a formal inquiry in 1909 with a verdict of foul play. As Ms. Cutler is James Sutton’s great-niece and Rosa Sutton’s great-granddaughter she had complete access to family records in researching the story. She was interviewed at the 101st annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians. close
