John Quist talked about history books and teaching history. He talked about the types of books appropriate for a class and for general readers. To start reading about the Civil War he recommended James McPherson’s Battle Cry of Freedom and David Blight’s Race and Reunion. Professor Quist is the author of Restless Visionaries: The Social Roots of Antebellum Reform in Alabama and Michigan, published by Louisiana State University Press and a forthcoming book. He was interviewed at the 101st annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians. close
