Military officials held a news briefing in the Pentagon to announce the release of modified casualty figures from the Persian Gulf war. The new casualty figures found almost one-fifth of the U.S. casualties in the Persian Gulf war were due to “friendly fire,” referring to the targeting of coalition troops by other coalition troops. The high rate of “friendly fire” casualties was accounted for partly by the poor visibility in Iraq and Kuwait due to the oil fires and night fighting, and the long range of high technology weapons which can hit targets beyond visual confirmation by the troops. close
