Rajmohan Gandhi talked about his biography of his grandfather, Gandhi: The Man, His People, and the Empire, published by University of California Press. In the book he provides a full account of the Mahatma’s life, the development of his beliefs, his political campaigns, and his complex relations with his family. It tracks the battle for Indian independence, recounting Gandhi’s campaigns against racial discrimination in South Africa and India, his attention to relations between Muslims and non-Muslims, and an examination of Gandhi’s strategies of non-violent resistance. During the event, Professor Gandhi read selections from his book and answered questions from audience members.

Professor Gandhi is Research Professor at the Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A former member of the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian Parliament), he led the Indian delegation to the U.N. Human Rights Commission in 1990. close
