The bill allows some 21 million taxpayers to forego paying the AMT in 2008. The bill also calls for offsets to cover the $62 million that would have been raised if the tax were collected. The Senate has failed to pass an AMT this year. The House passed an AMT last year and is expected to vote again Wednesday. The AMT was established to get taxes from people with high incomes who sometimes find methods to avoid paying taxes. Increasingly, however, moderate income earners have become subject to the AMT because the tax exemption has not been indexed.
