Throes recounts a history of the United States from 1829 to 1877. The second book in a proposed triology, Mr. McDougall profiles the Civil War, Reconstruction, and westward expansion, and relays the political and cultural landscape of the time. Following his talk, Mr. McDougall answered questions from the audience.
Walter McDougall is the author of Freedom Just Around the Corner: A New America History, 1585-1828 and the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Heavens and the Earth: A Political History of the Space Age. Mr. McDougall is currently a history professor at the University of Pennsylvania.
