Walter Borneman talked about his book Polk: The Man Who Transformed the Presidency and America (Random House, April 8, 2008). In his book he recounts the tenure of former President James K. Polk (1845-1849), who wished to serve only a single term and was responsible for the establishment of an independent treasury, the doubling of U.S. territory, and a reduction in tariffs as well as the expansion of executive power. William Polk died three months after leaving the presidency at the age of 52. Mr. Borneman responded to questions from audience members.
