Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan testified about reported efforts to cover up the role of the White House in leaking the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson as a Central Intelligence Agency covert operative. Much of the questioning from committee members focused on his book What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception and his criticism of the president and his most senior aides on a wide range of topics, from the handling of pre-war intelligence to the response to Hurricane Katrina. In his testimony Mr. McClellan also said the White House had “sought to avoid public accountability and scrutiny” about the leaking of a CIA agent’s name and “overstated and over-packaged” intelligence related to the Iraq war. In sometime contentious exchanges, he also spoke about his decision to publicly criticize the Bush administration. close
