Former presidential speechwriters talked about crafting messages for the president. They focused on writing speeches for the nation in time of crisis and other major addresses. They also talked about their personal experiences in the White House and particularly memorable moments.

Ray Price was a speechwriter for President Nixon; Don Baer, and Walter Shapiro for President Clinton; and Kenneth Khachigian, and Peter Robinson for President Reagan.

The Presidential Oral History Program at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs hosted a two-day White House Speechwriters Symposium, bringing together speechwriters from the Nixon through Clinton administrations to discuss White House communications and crafting a presidential message. close
