Joe Arpaio talked about the book he wrote with Len Sherman, Joe’s Law: America’s Toughest Sheriff Takes on Illegal Immigration, Drugs, and Everything Else That Threatens America (AMACOM, May 2, 2008). Joe Arpaio has been sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, since 1992. Over the past 16 years he has maintained an average approval rating of 80 percent. He described his non-traditional approach to law enforcement and explained how he saves $500,000 a year by eliminating creature comforts for inmates. He also talked about his education and rehabilitation programs for the inmates. He responded, including some heated exchanges, to questions from members of the audience.
