President George H. W. Bush spoke on the events in the Soviet Union from the Shawnee Inn in Kennebunkport, ME, during his summer vacation. On the day, reports from Moscow indicated the coup by communist hard-liners was crumbling, President Bush discussed his phone call with Russian President Boris Yeltsin and took questions from reporters on future U.S.-Soviet relations.
