Mr. Bradlee, retiring executive editor of The Washington Post, discussed his more than fifty years with that newspaper. He commented on the Watergate scandal, which established the reputation of the Post through the investigative reporting of Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Mr. Bradlee reminisced about Presidents Nixon and Johnson, who “hated the press” and Presidents Ford and Reagan who “loved the press” and knew how to use it. A good newspaper “ought to be exciting....It ought to have good writing in it. It ought to amuse, entertain, as well as inform and be useful,” Mr. Bradlee said. close
