President George H.W. Bush nominated Justice Thomas to the Supreme Court on July 8, 1991. The Senate confirmed his nomination on October 15, 1991 with a vote of 52 in favor, 48 opposed. Justice Thomas was named to succeed retired Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.
