President George H.W. Bush responded to questions from reporters during a photo opportunity during a Cabinet Room meeting in the White House with Republican congressional leaders. He discussed his reasons for requesting a 120-day delay in congressional consideration of Israel’s request for $10 billion in loan guarantees to increase the possibility of a Middle East peace conference in October 1991. The President also said he was “impressed” by U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas' testimony in the first day of his confirmation hearings to the Supreme Court, and expressed confidence in Robert Gates, the president’s nominee to head the Central Intelligence Agency. The president also joked that he would like to see the Soviet Union “hurry up” when he was asked how he views the Soviet troop pull-out in Cuba. close
