The committee heard testimony from Robert Clarke, comptroller of the currency, during a hearing on his nomination for a second five year term as comptroller. The Comptroller of the Currency oversees over 4,000 nationally chartered banks, containing two-thirds of the assets of the banking industry. Mr. Clarke has been criticized for his handling of the nation’s banking system during the past five years, when more banks failed than any period since the Depression, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation neared financial collapse. Testimony was marked by strong criticism of Mr. Clarke’s oversight and regulation of the banking industry by committee Democrats, with committee Republicans claiming the industry’s problems extend well beyond the reach of Mr. Clarke’s supervision. close
