The Women’s Research and Educational Institute awarded the third annual American Woman Award to Washington correspondent Sarah McClendon for her work in the White House press corps and Washington journalism coverage. Several speakers rose to honor Ms. McClendon, who is well-known for her blunt questions to recent presidents in press conferences and news briefings. Ms. McClendon delivered brief remarks on her experiences in Washington, in which she discussed the role of the media in the American government, criticized the Reagan and Bush presidencies for misleading the American public, and said the American democracy was under attack from Washington power brokers. close
