Sen. Danforth, the chief Senate sponsor of the Supreme Court nomination of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas, and Sen. Biden, chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee, made statements and debated the Supreme Court nomination of Clarence Thomas. The debate took place on the floor of the Senate shortly after Sen. Biden announced in a floor speech that he would vote against Clarence Thomas' nomination to the Supreme Court in the Judiciary Committee’s vote, scheduled for later in the morning. Sen. Biden justified his opposition to Judge Thomas' nomination on the grounds that Judge Thomas had repeatedly given vague answers or declined to answer the questions of the Judiciary Committee in his confirmation hearings. Sen. Biden said he would rather vote on Judge Thomas' “wings” than on his “roots.” Later in the morning, the Judiciary Committee, in a tie vote, failed to endorse Judge Thomas' nomination, and sent the nomination to the floor of the Senate without an endorsement. close
