During the National Black Media Coalition’s 1991 conference, entitled “Shaping Our Own Agenda: Paving the Road to Parity,” Mr. Silverman and Ms. Murphy participated in a forum on recent trends in minority owned newspapers. Mr. Silverman discussed his work with the Gannett Co., Inc. program “News 2000,” whose aim is to help the creators of a newspaper relate more closely to their readership and forge a wider readership for newspapers in general. Ms. Murphy further discussed the role of newspapers owned by minorities in forging closer communities, and called for closer ties between communities and their media. close
