President George H.W. Bush spoke at a fund raiser for Republican legislative candidates in Brunswick, NJ on the domestic policies of his administration, claiming his policies were thwarted by the “garbage” legislation sent to him by the Democrats in Congress which he would not sign. He discussed the administration’s efforts in housing, energy, transportation, drugs, crime, education, and the environment. He said the administration’s crime bill was the most comprehensive crime legislation in history, and labelled the Americans with Disabilities Act “the most far-reaching civil rights bill in decades.” President Bush further criticized the unemployment compensation legislation supported by the Democrats in Congress for its failure to pay for itself. He called for the passage of the Dole amendment concerning unemployment, saying it would pay for itself.
