The subcommittee heard testimony on the changing ballistic missile threats to the United States. Witnesses, including several scholars on national defense, testified on the effect of the improved diplomatic relationship between the U.S. and the Soviet Union on the nuclear threat against the United States. In addition, witnesses commented on President Bush’s announcement from the previous week that the U.S. would withdraw its short range nuclear weapons from the land, air, and seas of Europe and Asia in reaction to the changes in the global political scene. close
