Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney addressed the 37th General Assembly of the Atlantic Treaty Association in the Department of State in Washington, DC. He talked about the U.S. foreign policy and defense responses to the dramatic changes in the global political balance following the end of the Cold War, the dismantling of the Warsaw Pact, and the Persian Gulf war. Secretary Cheney said NATO would continue to exist and play a role in global security given the number of unanswered questions in the new world order. The Atlantic Treaty Organization was created to promote the interests and promote solidarity among the countries in the North Atlantic region. close
