The Senate continued debate on the nomination of Judge Clarence Thomas to be an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. After the debate Judge Thomas was confirmed on a 52 to 48 vote. The Senate had originally planned to vote on the nomination one week ago, but the vote was postponed in the face of allegations by Anita Hill, a former assistant, who claimed that Judge Thomas had sexually harassed her ten years ago. Over the weekend, the Senate Judiciary Committee held three days of hearings on the allegations. The committee heard testimony from Judge Thomas and from Ms. Hill, a University of Oklahoma Law School professor who worked for him in the Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Clarence Thomas was then a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. close
