The committee heard testimony from Senator John Glenn, member of the Senate Armed Services committee, and David Kay, a member of a U.N. weapons inspection team investigating Iraqi weapons installations, on Iraq’s nuclear weapon production capability. Sen. Glenn introduced legislation that would mandate international sharing of nuclear weaponry information with the International Atomic Energy Agency to reduce the spread of nuclear weapons. Mr. Kay discussed his experiences as a member of the Iraqi inspection team which had made seven trips to investigate Iraq’s weapon installations. He said that because Iraq had been within 12 to 18 months of producing a nuclear bomb at the time of the outbreak of the Persian Gulf war, constant U.N. inspections of Iraq’s weapons plants would be necessary to ensure Iraq’s nuclear program was not continuing in covert operations. close
