In a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House, Judge Clarence Thomas was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. The President, Mrs. Bush and Mrs. Thomas accompanied Judge Thomas as he was administered the oath by Associate Justice Byron White. President Bush praised Judge Thomas for his excellent legal mind and his passionate devotion to equal opportunity for all Americans. Judge Thomas thanked family and friends for their support of his journey. He remarked, “Only in America could this day have been possible.” close
