Senator Arlen Specter, member of the Senate Judiciary committee, discussed the reopened Supreme Court confirmation hearings of U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Clarence Thomas during a recess in the hearings. Senator Specter, who had been selected by the Republicans on the committee to conduct the questioning of witnesses in opposition to the confirmation of Judge Thomas, maintained University of Oklahoma Law Professor Anita Hill committed perjury in stating that no one had told her that her testimony against Judge Thomas could result in the withdrawal of the nominee from the confirmation process. He said in later questioning she admitted she had spoken to a Senate staffer about the possible consequences of her testimony. Senator Specter said he would attack Ms. Hill’s credibility in the upcoming afternoon session by going word for word over her testimony from the October 10 hearing. close
