The emergence of democratic movements in Eastern European nations, and recent events in the Soviet Union, have prompted the United States and its NATO allies to reduce the size of a number of military bases in Western Europe, a move that is not only an important issues for members of Congress but also for the regions which are affected abroad. In the German Rhineland region, the U.S. plans to close several military bases. Discussing the closings is Ranier Bruderle, German Minister of Economics and Transportation, and the deputy prime minister of the State of Rhineland Palatine. He talked about the effects for his state. Mr. Bruderle, who is a member of the Free Democratic Party, also addressed the wider implications of German unification on the federal states. close
