POW/MIA Issues Day One The Senate’s new Select Committee on POW’s and MIA’s held its first hearing and began its efforts to resolve some of the unanswered questions about alleged prisoners of war and soldiers who are classified as missing in Southeast Asia. The committee will work to declassify long-secret information, review existing intelligence data, and examine whether the U.S. government has done its best for the missing soldiers and their families. The committee will attempt to insure that there is an effective process for evaluating and responding to reports of live sightings of American soldiers. According to Defense Secretary Cheney there are 2,273 Americans still unaccounted for in Southeast Asia. close
