Members of the House Banking Committee debated amendments to bank legislation that would allow the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to borrow up to $30 billion from the Federal Treasury. Earlier in the week, a comprehensive banking reform bill was defeated in the House of Representatives that would have included funding for the FDIC. The legislation being considered by the committee included safeguards to allow greater regulation of financially unstable banking institutions. The legislation had been drafted by Rep. Gonzalez, chairman of the House Banking Committee. close
