WDSU-TV carried live coverage of the election returns for the Louisiana gubernatorial runoff election. Louisiana holds open elections, in which candidates of all parties run against each other, with the top two vote-getters competing in a runoff election. In the 1991 Louisiana governors' race, Democrat Edwin Edwards and Republican David Duke defeated other challengers, including incumbent Governor Buddy Roemer, to make it to the runoff election. The runoff election attained national prominence due to David Duke’s past participation in Ku Klux Klan activities. The broadcast included interviews with both candidates and participants in the election campaigns, county by county poll results, videotaped interviews with the candidates from the campaign, election night analysis by political observers, and the victory and concession speeches by the candidates. Democrat Edwin Edwards won the Louisiana gubernatorial election by a margin of 61 to 39 percent. close
