With 96 members sitting in the Senate chamber, Senate Ethics Committee Chairman Howell Heflin presented his panel’s report rebuking the conduct of Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA). The Senate did not vote on the matter. The 77 year old Democrat had been under investigation for improper dealings with former savings and loan owner Charles Keating. Less than two years ago the Ethics Committee responded to a charge that, in exchange for political contributions, five U.S. Senators had provided Mr. Keating with official help in his dealings with savings and loan regulators. Earlier this year the Ethics Committee dropped its case against the other four lawmakers, leaving only Senator Cranston’s conduct for further scrutiny. close
