Secretary of Education Lamar Alexander, participating in a discussion with a Louisville high school students and others on the American educational system. They discussed Louisville’s America 2000 program and initiatives for school reform. Greenwood Elementary School in Jefferson County, Kentucky is one of the county schools in Louisville. It is undergoing court ordered school reform, after a 1989 case found inequalities in county-by-county school funding. Louisville is expected to launch its own America 2000 education program, based on President George Bush’s federal plan to improve education, on December 3, 1991. In April, President Bush announced America 2000, a four-pronged initiative to help the nation to prepare young children to start school; to increase the high school graduation rate to 90 percent; to require students to show basic competency in core subject matter including mathematics, science, English, history, and geography; and to eliminate drugs and violence in schools. close
