The subcommittee examined the proposed sale of 40 percent of the McDonnell Douglas Corporation’s commercial aircraft business to Taiwan Aerospace. The hearing focused on how the proposed sale could affect U.S.-based aerospace supplier firms and jobs within the domestic aerospace industry. Also at issue was whether or not the sale will accelerate the transfer of strategic commercial or defense technology to potential U.S. rivals. The discussion also touched on ways to prevent the future sale of critical U.S. trade and manufacturing assets that could hurt U.S. competitiveness and compromise national security. In a recent letter to President Bush, Senator Bingaman and several of his colleagues questioned whether the proposed sale was in our national interest, citing the enormous transfer of technology most of which, they say, was paid for by U.S. taxpayers. close
