While Prime Minister John Major attended a European Community Summit, Leader of the House, John MacGregor, answered questions about the European Community. He spoke against the economic and monetary union which would create a single currency for the European Community. Mr. MacGregor also answered questions about the Conservative Party’s opposition to social programs and federal rules that would be created by the European Community. Mr. MacGregor has been a member of the House of Commons since 1974. He has held a number of leadership positions, such as Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1989 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1985. Prime Minister Major returned to the House of Commons the following day and defended the Conservative Party’s policies regarding the European Community. close
