Senator George Mitchell, Senate Majority Leader, and Senator Wendell Ford, Senate Majority Whip, briefed reporters on issues relating to the civil rights bill and reforms of the confirmation process which the president mentioned in a speech of his own earlier in the day. Sen. Mitchell criticized the president for suggesting Senate staff would not be covered under the provisions of the civil rights bill while the president’s staff itself would not be covered under the anti-discrimination provisions. He also mentioned reports which suggested the leak of FBI material on Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, which resulted in additional confirmation hearings on charges of sexual harassment against Judge Thomas, occurred in the White House instead of the Senate. close
