Presidential Departure for Pacific Rim
President George H.W. Bush read a statement at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland before departing for a 12 day trip to Southeast Asia and Australia. He said the key to improving the American economy lies in opening new markets, and also stressed the importance of maintaining American security in the area of the Pacific rim. He said the highest priority in the trip was creating new jobs for Americans, which may be aided by expanding American markets abroad and eliminating trade barriers in Asian countries. He did not take questions following his statement. close
