The committee is holding a series of field hearings on problems in the U.S. economy. The first hearing was held in Bridgeport, Connecticut, an industrial, coastal city whose mayor last year filed for bankruptcy for the city. Unemployment there is more than nine percent, and the city is listed as one of nation’s ten poorest in terms of per capita income. The committee heard testimony from Bridgeport residents and business owners on the effect of the recession in their daily lives. close
