Representatives of civil rights organizations opposed the confirmation of Judge Thomas. Mr. Buchanan felt that Judge Thomas was hostile to Supreme Court precedents and to the U.S. Congress. Other witnesses pointed out the nominee’s low rating by the American Bar Association compared to all other Supreme Court nominees. Mr. Chambers was of the opinion that Judge Thomas would undermine progress made thus far for African Americans and other underprivileged groups through previous Supreme Court decisions. close
