Members of the Dail heard farewell remarks from Irish Prime Minister Charles Haughey and nominated Albert Reynolds as the new Prime Minister of Ireland. Mr. Haughey resigned on February 6, 1992 due to allegations that he knew of a ten year wire tapping scheme. His former Justice Minister Seán Doherty had announced that ten years ago he authorized taps of two journalists' telephones during an investigation over government leaks. Prime Minister Haughey’s administration had also been accused of government links to private companies and insider trading during the privatization of the National Sugar Company. close
