Bernard Weatherill, Speaker, House of Commons, delivered his farewell address to the House of Commons. He announced he would retire when Prime Minister Major called for a general election and dissolved Parliament. Prime Minister John Major and Opposition Leader Neil Kinnock both gave tributes to the Speaker and Mrs. Speaker in speeches that were both humourous and emotional. Weatherill, a member of Parliament who is nonpartisan, has been the Speaker during the entire time that the House of Commons has been televised. close
