The task force on Covert Action recently released the results of their investigation into U.S. covert action. Members of the task force discussed their recommendations for future U.S. foreign policy at this news conference. Covert Action began as a plausible deniable activity and now defined as to activity to influence political, economic or military conditions abroad where the governmental role not be apparent or acknowledged publicly. Conclusions included were that such activities were at odds to accountability of government to the public, activities should be strongly curtailed and be exceptional matters. Procedures for executive and congressional oversight were encouraged and new rules were needed. close
